1. The Narrative

In ancient Takkasilā, Gandhāra, a Brahmin raised a bull named Nandivisāla as his own son. To repay the master's kindness, the bull suggested a bet that he could pull a hundred loaded wagons. Initially, the Brahmin used harsh language, causing the bull to remain still. After learning his lesson, the Brahmin spoke with gentle and loving words, enabling Nandivisāla to pull the immense load successfully.

2. Translated Verse

"One should speak only pleasing words, never unpleasant ones at any time. Through pleasing speech, the bull Nandivisāla lifted the heavy burden, brought wealth to his master, and rejoiced in his own heart."

3. Identification of the Birth

At the conclusion of the discourse, the Buddha identified the births:

• The Brahmin was Ānanda.
• The bull Nandivisāla was The Buddha himself.
